It was just a normal day, or, at least, as normal a day as any in the life of the young Christopher, scarcely fifteen and already running a thriving information network with connections to the black market.

Chris had decided to take most of the day off after one of his cover offices in the next city over had been ransacked. The criminals had no doubt been looking for him, and due to its proximity with his actual residence, Chris decided that it would be safer if he went home for the day. Even if they found out where he lived--which the boy doubted but didn't rule out; better safe than sorry--it was much easier to fight in familiar territory than otherwise.

Of course, on the way home, the boy had been sure to dress casually, so as not to attract attention, and be especially aware of his surroundings. This led to him noticing something that he would never had otherwise and, unbeknown to the boy, would affect his current as well as future lifestyle drastically.

A girl?

He stopped, backtracking, and found that it was indeed a girl that he was looking at, barely ten years old. She was filthy and dirt-covered, but a girl, nonetheless.

On impulse, he asked her, "Who are you? Where are you from?"

The girl merely looked at him, as if she didn't quite understand what he was saying.

At that, Chris decided to take things slow and ask her questions one at a time.

"Your name?"

She shook her head.

She didn't have one.

"Your home?"

She shook her head.

She didn't have one.

"Then, do you want to come with me?" The moment it left his mouth, the boy regretted it. It was a stupid offer for normal people, but for him, someone who is almost constantly in danger, it was a mind-numbingly retarded offer.

The girl only looked at him with that same blank look.

Chris sighed and, against his better judgment, took the girl by the arm, motioned for her to stand up, and pulled her along with him as he walked home.

Christopher is a really minor, minor character in my story Paranormal Investigators. He's the cousin of the friend of one of Iria's ex-employees. (I am debating whether to keep him in the story or just give him his own story.) Chris is a very logical, level-headed person, so randomly taking a girl he found on the street home isn't what he would normally do.

This was shorter than I originally planned, but I think it's decent.
